Premature birth and permanent tooth size

This review brought together observational studies of permanent tooth size in people born preterm and at full term.

The findings suggest a possible association with smaller dimensions in some permanent teeth, especially after extremely preterm birth. The evidence has limitations; this does not predict an individual child’s teeth.

For parents

If your child was born prematurely, share their birth and medical history with the dentist. They can explain what matters for your child’s care.

Understanding the study

A closer look at the evidence.

01

The question

Is preterm birth associated with differences in permanent tooth crown dimensions?

02

The approach

A systematic review and meta-analysis brings together findings from existing studies. Here, the underlying evidence was observational.

03

The limits

An association is not an individual prediction. The findings need to be read alongside the study’s limitations and a child’s own dental assessment.
