How much toothpaste does my child need?

Two small amounts, illustrated clearly. The right choice depends on age and your dentist’s advice.

The amount changes at age three.

Choose fluoride toothpaste and check its concentration on the tube. Your dentist may recommend a different strength for your child.

Under 3

A small smear

At least 1,000 ppm fluoride

Ages 3–6

A pea-sized amount

1,000–1,500 ppm fluoride

Age 7+

Check the amount with your dentist

1,350–1,500 ppm fluoride

Help with the routine

Brush about two minutes, twice daily, including before bed. An adult should brush younger children’s teeth or help them. Keep checking technique as children become more independent.

After brushing

For children who can spit reliably, spit out excess toothpaste without rinsing. Keep the tube under adult control and do not let a child eat toothpaste.
